At first glance, this appears to be such an inane comment. Why would you disable comments on your WordPress Blog posts?
The whole point of Blogging is to engage with your readership and encourage them to contribute to the work.
Why Close Comments?
As a precaution against malicious attack, it is considered to be prudent to close your posts to comments after a preset period.
Reader interaction if highest shortly after posting a new blog post. As a responsible Blog owner and Administrator, you need to be on hand to answer any questions, promptly, that may arise.
It is standard practice to leave any such questions in the comments section of your Blog. Where you the moderator and administrator can read and respond to any interaction.
I disable comments on posts older than 30 days. I follow this practice on all my WordPress blogs, and since I started doing this I have seen my spam count drop right away.
If you wish to implement this strategy on your Blog, it couldn’t be simpler. Go to Settings – Discussion on your WordPress Dashboard.
Look for the “Automatically close comments on articles older than” setting, select the number of days you wish to use and Scroll to the bottom of the screen and “Save Changes”.
Override Comment Deadline
If you choose to disable comments in this manner, you will be disabling this feature for ALL posts in your Blog.
However, you may have a situation where you do not wish this to happen. In this instance, you may download and install the plugin Override Comment Deadline, available from the WordPress plugin store.
Once you activated this plugin you will find a new options box in your post editor.
From this, you will see that, you can select to override this comment deadline for this particular post. This is useful for posts you consider to be evergreen and you want to maintain your readers interaction.
This options box is only visible when you have disabled comments from the Settings, Discussion panel.
Hacker intrusion is mercifully rare on WordPress Blogs but, you can’t be too careful. Spam attacks are, however, very common and I would suggest using something like wpDiscuz because this introduces a Captcha element to discourage bot attack.
Finally, you may choose to disable comments at the post level, on an individual basis.
By default, I allow comments. I don’t always receive comments. But one should always leave the door open as a welcoming sign.
A welcoming sign is a good analogy for the purpose behind this post. You may leave your front door open all day to welcome guests, who may be passing. But you don’t leave your front door open all night, when you wish to have some privacy.
Neither do you leave your front door open when you go off on holiday. So, you should be doing everything that you can to secure your blog.
So, yes we want to make visitors welcome. But, that doesn’t mean they can come in a steal all your possessions.
Benefits of Closing WordPress Discussion
Whilst it may seem counterproductive, Closing comments after a preset period, may actually increase engagement from loyal follower.
Regular followers will see what action you have taken and will understand why. When they see a new post, they will be spurred to ask questions rather than to prevaricate.
You will have closed a potential weak-spot in your Blog armoury. Spammers and hackers can use open discussion as a potential ingress point to your precious Blog.
The workload of the busy blogger will be reduced as you will not spend hours needlessly checking comments every day. Even if you only check your comments less frequently, you are still saving valuable time.
